Text: Isaiah 9:1-7

If there is one thing that living in 2020 has taught us, it’s that this world is broken. Even if you are not a believer, it’s not hard to see all of the chaos that is going on out there, on so many levels. The world is yelling at the top of its lungs that something isn’t right. It speaks to our innate sense that there is a ‘rightness’ that we are drifting, or lately, running full speed, away from. God is the author of the rightness that we crave, whether we recognize it or not. He created us to be in perfect harmony with Him, but the sin that entered the world is rotting away the edges of our lives. It’s hard to write these words on such a dreary December day, but if we look to this passage in Isaiah, we can see a beacon of hope in the darkness:

The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
    a light has dawned.

Some days it’s a lot harder to see that light. But the very fact that the world seems to just be falling deeper into darkness, and how the bible talks about that over and over and over again, simply proves that God knows and has it all in His hands. We only need to be patient and faithful and keep looking up to the One who controls all things.
